Practical guide

What to do after an accident.

A few practical steps can help you look after yourself and preserve a useful record of what happened.

Put your health first

Seek appropriate medical attention. Explain how the injury happened and keep a note of treatment and follow-up appointments. If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, contact the emergency services.

Make a factual record

Write down the date, time, location and sequence of events while they are fresh. Record what you saw and experienced, keeping that separate from anything someone else told you. Report the incident to the relevant organisation where appropriate.

Preserve what you can safely

  • Photographs of the location and any relevant hazard.
  • Witness contact details and an incident reference.
  • Available camera footage and relevant correspondence.
  • Receipts and records of expenses or time off work.

Ask about your options

A solicitor can discuss the relevant time limit, evidence and whether further investigation is appropriate. You do not need to collect a complete case file before making that first call.
