Practical guide

Preparing for your first conversation.

You do not need legal knowledge or a perfectly organised file. A clear account of your circumstances is a useful starting point.

The essentials

  • What happened, where and approximately when.
  • The injury or additional harm you experienced.
  • Who or which organisation was involved.
  • Any treatment, time off work or ongoing difficulties.

Bring what you already have

Reference numbers, photographs, letters and a short timeline may be helpful. Keep the originals. If documents contain sensitive information, ask the firm which secure channel to use.

Tell the team what matters to you

You may have concerns about returning to work, care, independence, costs or the time a case could take. Raise these at the outset so the team can explain what may be possible.

Ask before deciding

Ask who would handle the matter, what the next steps involve and how funding would work. An assessment does not oblige you to instruct the firm and does not guarantee that a claim will be accepted.
